Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Reply to your question re: Murray riding mower transaxle, plastic screw, screw cap

Question
Yes, I have the parts.  All that came off was the screw cap, and the inside cone.  Both are in good shape.  Don't see an indicator for how much fluid to add - but in 9 years, may have been there but just worn off or down.  Thanks for the prompt reply.

Also, on the lawn gouging.  I suppose aftermarket brackets and wheels are available to add to the mower deck.  Do you know if true or not?

Sincerely,

Dan Johnson

My transaxle does have a plastic screw cap (about 2-1/2 inches in diameter) on top.  Cap came off, and quite a bit of fluid was slung out, plus the rubber cone came out - same diameter as cap (fits inside), and about 2-1/2 inches deep.  It is a Murray 14 HP, 42 inch cut, model 42560X92B, that I bought in July 97.  The date of manufacture is stated as 97052.

What kind of fluid do I put back in?  It's obvious how the cone gones back in, but is it for air seal?   No fluid in top of cone, I suppose.
In other words, how do I put it back together?
Any help most appreciated.

As far as running, this has been an excellent lawn tractor.  One complaint I have, as I've seen others complain about, is that the mower deck needs four wheels, instead of two, to keep from gouging into the lawn, especially on uneven ground, when making turns, etc.  I suppose wheels can be added  safely with little trouble?

Sincerely,

Dan Johnson

Here's a Murry parts link, but it does not have a detailed picture of the transmission.

Amsoil sells synthetic oil or you can usually find or order hydrostat oil from Sears or most auto parts stores.

Do you have the old parts?
Let me know.

Answer
You could install some wheels yourself but finding the parts may be a challege; you may have to make some brackets.

I would fill the tranaxle up to the bottom of the rubber insert with hydrostatic fluid.  Run the mower a few yards and re-check fluid level.
