Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh Pull Starter-Disassembly Possible?, recoil starter, center shaft

Question
I'm working on a 10 HP Tecumseh engine (HM100; made in 1993) with a jangling noise coming from the recoil (rope pull) starter.  I removed the recoil starter and one of the small springs that holds one of the two pawls inward has broken off.  Thus, the pawl is free to swing outward when the engine is running and the jangling noise is created from the pawl striking the assembly.

I can't figure out if there is any way the Tecumseh recoil starter can be disassembled so I can replace the small broken spring.  It looks like the center “shaft” of the recoil starter was pressed in place.  Is there a way to disassemble this unit or is the only choice to purchase a new recoil starter?    If disassembly is possible, can you give me instructions?  I already went to the library but the Chilton manual doesn't discuss the Tecumseh recoil starter.

Thank you.

Answer
The pin style starter is very difficult to repair...you need a press to it.  A hammer and punch will not work...I have tried many times but it is too difficult.

Go to a Tecumseh dealer or a local shop and see if they have a used starter or just buy a new one.  You can find them on e-bay as well.

The newer starters use a screw and they are much eaiser to repair. They are very common starters so you should be albe to find one pretty easy.
