Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs and Stratton 12HP on Dynamark Rider, briggs and stratton, cam shaft

Question
Hello,

I have a Briggs and Stratton 12HP engine on my Dynamark Tractor (~1987).  The oil turned to rubber on it while stored (I know I was bad on changing regularly).  I have cleaned it out and ran SeaFoam in it to try and clear all the gunk.  I have put fresh oil in it, but am afraid to run it very long until I am certain that all the gunk is really gone.  Is the oil system in these a simple splasher, or does it have a pump and channels that could be all gummed up too?

Thanks,
Al

Answer
The oil system uses a slinger that is driven by the cam shaft.  It basically splashes the oil around; this is why it is important not to overfill the oil.

I would run the engine to warm it up and change the oil several times to clean it out before you use it for extented periods of time.

Let me know if you have any problems with the engine.
