Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower, briggs and straton, oil level

Question
I wonder if most powered lawn mower owners are bothered by what bothers me?

When I try to observe the oil level in my engine, so much oil is on the stick that seeing where the oil level is -- is very difficult (I measure when the motor is cold, I wipe the stick dry before inserting, and I insert the stick slowly and without rotating -- so as not to pick-up extraneous oil).

When I change oil, I turn the hot (just-used) mower on it's side (air filter up) until it is slightly beyond vertical -- and yet I only collect 10-12 ounces of oil, when the specs for my mower says that capacity is 20 ounces. Which makes me wonder if I am removing enough of the old oil.

My mower is one-year-old, Sears self-propelled with a Briggs and Straton 6.75 HP 4-cycle engine.

Answer
Hi Ken,

I have not run into that problem.  Usually when checked cold, the oil has drained down, leaving the upper stick and tube clean.  The oil level can usually be checked easily without wiping. If the oil doesn't settle, it might be easier to check it when hot.
For draining, it is best to use the drain plug, if equipped.

Best,
Michael
