Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): New battery - but will not start, motorcycle battery, riding lawnmower

Question
I bought a used riding lawnmower (Montgomery Ward) - was supposed to have had a new battery a few months ago (a motorcycle battery). Would not start unless I jumped it off - seemed to run fine, but would not restart. I bought a new battery - same scenario. Could it be the starter?

It could be the starter but I'd check the connections first.  Then I'd do a quick check to make sure there are no accessories (belts, clutches, brake) dragging on the engine when they are disengaged.  If everything is fine and the engine turns freely, then the starter is likely the culprit.  Hope this helps.
