Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Quit Running, Cannot Pull Cord Now., craftsman model, hp honda

Question
Yesterday I started my 21" Craftsman (Model 917.377790) self-propelled mower with a 5.5 HP Honda eigine and mowed for a minute before the engine stalled. I started it again and after a minute or two of mowing, it quit again. Now, I cannot start it becuase something is stuck or the engine is fryed and the cord cannot be pulled more than a couple of inches (despite the fact that I've tried to pull it with all of my force). As soon as the cord engages, it cannot be pulled any further.

I checked oil and there was enough of it in the engine - although it was pretty thick due to the recent cold wave. Did not see any smoke coming out of the engine. Will appreciate any help on fixing this thing. Mower is three years old with no repair history.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Try removing the spark plug and then pull the string.  If that does not work then check the blade for binding with the spark plug still removed.

If it still won't pull then I would start removing parts and checking for binding.  If you remove all the parts down to the crankshaft and it still won't pull then there must be something broke in the engine.

Also, check the engine shut-off cable for correct operation.
Is the engine an over-head valve model?
Let me know.
