Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Safety Bar on Murray Push Mower Doesnt Work, tecumseh vantage, safety bar

Question
I recently acquired a Murray 20 push mower with a Tecumseh Vantage 3.5HP engine. The mower works perfectly except for the safety bar on the handle of the mower.

The bar does nothing to shut down the engine, and it makes no difference when you mow wether you hold it in or not.

On the side of the engine where the safety bar's cable goes to there is a lever on a spring that moves back and forth when the bar is engaged/disengaged. There also is a single green wire that leads up under the cowling to possibly the electronics. The end of this wire near the lever is disconnected and I cannot find where it is to be reconnected.

Do you know if this wire is associated with my problem, and if so, where does it get reconnected? I cannot locate a connector for it to attach to. It is a pain to always have to shut the mower down by grounding the spark plug with a screwdriver.

Answer
Hi Reuban,

This wire was attached to a tab on the lever and spring assembly.  The tab may have broken off.  The lever grounds or ungrounds the wire, which kills the ignition from the coil.  Look to see where the wire was attached and add a screw to re-attach it.  Then when you move the handle, the lever should contact the plate that the wire will be attached to.

Let me know how you make out.
