Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Mower starts then dies, eager 1 engine, sears

I have a 5year old Sears mower with an Eager 1 engine.The mower starts fine then dies after about 5 seconds. I replaced the plug, primer bulb(had been chewed by mice)took off the bowl on the carb and made sure the holes on the threaded bolt were open. Sears says I need a new "small block". What is a small block? Could I try anything else. Thank you.

Hi John,

They meant to say a "short block" which is a new engine minus the carb, muffler, fuel tank, etc.  If you can get your engine to run by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb's intake, then there probably is still a lack of fuel flow through the carb.
