Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Craftsman Eager-1 Lawn Mower 6.75 engine, craftsman eager 1, sears craftsman

Question
My mower is about 4 years old. Last summer 2004  and now this spring 2005. It seems to not be getting enough fuel/air to run. The primer button can be held down while running and it seems to run better. Once primer button is released it surges and knocks and dies alot. I change the oil,air filter, spark plug, every year, even the blade this spring. During winter months all fuel is ran out. I'm guessing there a a gasket somewhere maybe cracked, and is sucking to much fuel/air...

Thanks in advance, Dean

Answer
Hi Dean,

You might have a leaking carb-to-engine gasket.  Check the carb screws for tightness and inspect the gasket.  If that's fine and you can keep the engine running by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb's intake.  Then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.
First, check the gas cap to make sure it is venting and not causing a vacuum in the tank.  If that's okay, you will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
