Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman WeedWhacker, compression gauge, oil leakage

Question
I have a 2-year old Sear's Craftsman gas WeedWhacker (21cc)- 16inch.  I have problems with starting it.  Repairs by Sears would cost more than a new one.

My question:

If I connect the spark plug to the cap and ground the other side would I be seeing sparks (discharges) across the gap when I pull the cord on the starter?

Thanks.

Answer
You should see spark but if the engine shut-off switch is defective it may prevent the spark.

Have you replaced the sparkplug?
Is the fuel fresh, less than 30 days old?
Do you have a compression gauge?
Are there signs of oil leakage on the back of the engine?  This area will be greasy and dirty if the gasket is leaking.

Let me know.
