Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 3.5hp, filter foam, retaining clip

Question
Well I replaced the bulb and still no luck.  I WAS able to get the mower started by pouring a small amount of gas into the carb, but it only ran for a 30 seconds or so.  It would re-start every time I tried it afterwards but again only for a brief time.

Hi Micheal!

I have a B&S 305 push mower that will not prime for some reason.  usually when I push the primer I can feel the suction of the gas from the tank.  Now it just pops back out without any fuel transfer.  I cleaned and replaced the filter foam, but still no luck.  any thoughts?

Hi Adam,

I suspect a rip or hole in the primer bulb.  Inspect it closely.  If so, you can pry it out and replace it.  Bring your engine model and serial number or the old bulb to a local repair shop.  Use a socket to re-install the retaining clip.

Let me know how you make out.

Answer
Hi Adam,

Does the bulb still pop out without a suction feel?

The stalling after 30 seconds, is most likely due to dirt or gummed fuel.  First, check the gas cap to make sure it is venting and not causing a vacuum in the tank.  If that's okay, you will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
