Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 5hp wont draw fuel - runs w/ gas poured in carb only, wood chipper shredder, fuel stabilizer

Question
I have an approx. 15 year old B&S 5hp on a Kgro wood chipper
shredder. The engine has sat for an unknown number of years
so I replaced the plug, changed the oil, drained the gas and
refilled it with 87 octane with a B&S fuel stabilizer. The only way
I can get the engine to start is by pouring gas into the carb and
after several cranks it will turn over and run for a few seconds
and then stop. I am assuming the problem is in the carb and
that it is not able to draw gas from the tank. any thoughts/
suggestions on how to fix this? There is no primer bulb, just a
choke control and an engine speed control with a stop position.

Thanks,
Carvel

Answer
Hi Carvel,

The carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
