Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Start point to adjust a carb on snowblower, adjustment screws, ariens snowblower

Question
Hi sir!
My dad gave me an old Ariens snowblower, When i use it the first time in the dark I noticed flames gettin out of the exhaust and the base of the exhaust turning red. I tried adjust the carb but I think I'm lost in the adjustements now. Its an old 10 hp engine, Theres a adjustement screw under the float bowl and one a little up over the intake(idle screw i think) What can I do to start all over on adjusting this? Thanks

Answer
I'd start by turning the adjustment screws all the way in.  Be very GENTAL...finger tight only on the adjustment screws or you could permanently damage the carb.

Once the needle(s) are GENTLY seated turn them out 1&1/4 to  1&1/2.  This should get it running.

For a final adjustment, make sure the engine is warmed up.  Increase the throttle to wide open.  Turn the bottom needle in until the engine starts to run rough or the RPMs drop.  Quickly turn the needle out just to keep the engine from stalling.  Continue to turn the needle out until the engine begins to run rough or the RPMs drop.  Now set the needle in between these two points.  If the engine is running properly the needle mid point should be within a 1/2 turn of the points you found.

Let me know if this helps.
