Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): non starting snowblower, internal passages, wire background

Question
Marc I read your instructions regarding left over fuel, but I dont know where to clean with the tag wire. Background:
I have a 8hp tecumseh on a snowpro snowblower. I left gas in, but I had stabil in it. The engine has spark, and I drained all the gas from tank and carb, and started with fresh gas. The engine will not start. If I spray carb cleaner in the carb, it runs for a sec, then dies.
I pulled off the bowl, and inspected the main jet. Its the one on the bowl I think? I sprayed carb cleaner on the jet, and inside the carb. I know there is a little pointy device connected to the float bowl. (I took this carb apart in a  unsucessful reapair on my part a few years ago) It goes up and down with the float. That looks ok, near as I can tell, but I didnt take it off the float to inspect it 100%
So where should I clean?
This engine ran perfect at the close of winter last year. As I mentioned earlier, I had taken it in to a shop 3 years ago for the exact symptom. They rebuilt the carb I think to fix it. I know there is gas in the carb, because the float bowl has gas in it. By the way what is tag wire? What you use to go around a loaf of bread? Thanks,
Kevin

Answer
The most important part to cleaning a carb is dislodging and removing any varnish / debris in the smaller passages inside the carb.  Using tag wire (about the same gauge as the wire inside a garbage bag tie) to push through all of the internal passages ensures anything inside the passage is dislodged.  Then follow up with aerosol carb cleaner.  There is one particularly notorious passage in a Tecumseh carb that needs to be clean.  Inside the stack (main jet/float bowl nut threads into to hold float bowl on) there is a tiny passage that will require you to bend a small 90° elbow in your tag wire to be able to insert it....look carefully for it.  If you had fuel inside the carb float bowl but the engine wasn't flooding, you can assume the float-inlet needle-seat assembly is functioning correctly.  The initial setting for the high speed mixture screw (on the float bowl nut) is 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.  Hope this helps.
