Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Coleman Generator, coleman powermate, hammer the hammer

Question
I have a Coleman Powermate 5000 generator that is equipped with a B&S 9hp Vangard engine, model # 185437. There seems to be some problem in the crank case and loud sounds can be heard when trying to start it. The piston moves and has great compression and the OHV both operate, just need to see what the problem is.

I have removed most of the outside of the power plant, now I just need to get the center or the armature off the engine shaft, how do I do this ?  I have removed the long bolt that runs through the armature, but there is no way there seems to use a puller as there is alot of plastic thru out the armature and the fan at the engine is also plastic. If I can remove this, I'm home free.... hope you can help.

Answer
Are you trying to remove the generator armature?

If so, Coleman sells a removal tool that consists of another long(er) bolt than the one you removed.  The armature itself is tapered as well as the engine crankshaft...this makes a very tight mounting connection.  Anyhow, you install the longer bolt from the armature removal kit and hit is with a big hammer.  The hammer impact knocks the armature off the tapered crankshaft.

Does this help?
