Auto Insurance Claims: Auto Insurance and Accident, own insurance, insurance company

Question
I was hit in the rear at a stop light and hit the car in front of me.  The guy who hit me took off.  I got out of my car and the guy I hit got out of his.  We were both ok.   I looked at his bumper and it did not look like any damage, but a little knick out of the rubber.  My car looked ok, headlights in tact, etc.  so I went home.  I called my insurance company to report it.   I got an estimate for my car and plan to have the insurance company pay for repairs less my deductible.   About 4 days after the accident I received a call from the guy that I hit and he said he got an estimate (which he sent to me) for 475.00 for a replacement bumper.  Should I turn in to my insurance or just pay him.  Will my insurance go up if I turn in a claim from him?  I think they have the accident down as nofault.  But no police report was filed.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Karen,

You should not pay him anything. You were not at fault for the damage. If he is also aware that someone hit you and took off then he should not be seeking damages from you. You should remind him that someone hit you and pushed you into him and as a result, you are not responsible for his damage. He should file a claim under his own insurance or pay for the damage himself.

I hope this helps
