Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower cover fell off/oil leak., oil filler cap, oil level

Question
That's what i was thinking, too..regarding the engine itself.  I guess what i'll try and do is try and get it to start after adding some oil, and see what happens.  if it sounds ok, then i'll assume no real damage, and just get a new recoil assembly.  Do you know about how much that sort of thing costs? Thanks for your help. Eric

Hi Eric,

The recoil assembly needs to be replaced.  A local repair shop should be able to order one for you.
The bigger problem is: If the oil filler cap came off and the oil level went low, the engine may have seized requiring engine rebuilding.  You might consider a new  mower.

Good Luck,
Michael

Answer
Sure, if it turns over, refill it and try it.  You have nothing to loose.  A new recoil may cost $30 or so but you might be able to locate a used one for $10.  If you have to go new, you might be able to just replace the housing alone, at a lower cost.

Best,
Michael
