Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 9 hp B&S wont turn all the way over (hurricane approaches), hurrican frances, briggs and stratton

Question
Hi  I have a 9 HP Briggs and Stratton (vanguard) enegine on a 5KW  generator.  Went to start it today. I was able to pull starter once without starting. After that it would not pull at all. After taking off pull assembly, I could turn it by hand almost 360 degrees in either direction until it "sticks" and makes a metal hitting metal sound.

The engine ran great for about 4 days straight during hurrican Frances. It was not low on oil (30 weight). Hardly anyone was open this morning due to approaching hurricane but I was able to get a mechanic at U-haul to take a quick look. He took off OHV cover and valve opens and shuts just fine when turn over crank by hand. valve rods appear fine and moveable. Couldn't suggest anything else to do at this time without taking engine apart.

Next stop was a lawn mower shop that was getting ready to close. I described sympton to one of the guys there and he thought that is sounded like the rods on the piston.

DO you have any idea what is wrong or any suggestions?

Should I drain the engine and take it apart (not much left to do at home since we have boarded up allready).

Thanks in advance
ROn

Answer
Hi Ron,

Sorry for my delay.  I hope you fared the storm okay.

It does sound like internal damage.  Strange, that damage would occur without signs of it while it ran before.  I can't think of any option other than disassembling what you need to and taking a look.

Good Luck,
Michael
