Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 17hp Kohler Pro, safety switches, safety switch

Question
Hi Marc,
My Craftsmen riding mower stopped in the middle of cutting the lawn. It cranks but will not start. Replaced spark plug but did not solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
When riders suddenly die, I suspect a safety switch has either come out of adjustment or is defective.  Because you were mowing when it quit, I would check the seat safety switch first.  You can temporarily bypass it with a piece of wire.  There are several safety switches that can be checked this way, one by one, until you determine which may be defective.  Another problem may be, if equipped, a low oil level or pressure switch on the engine.  This is usually corrected by topping up the oil to the appropriate level.  Hope this helps.
