Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower electrical short, mtd riding mower, blown fuse

Question
I have a MTD riding mower with a 14.5HP B&S.  As I was mowing, the engine died and I discovered a blown fuse but have not been able to locate the short.  When I replace the fuse it shorts out as soon as I turn the key.  I changed the solenoid, but I don't think this model has a voltage regulator.  Am I wrong, and do you know the most likely place for the short to develop?  Thanks

Answer
The most likely spot for a short to develop is in a spot where a wire has chafed and become bare and is contacting ground.  Another likely spot is at the various connectors that two wires are contacting that shouldn't be (usually jacket on wire is pulled back outside of the connector and touching another).  You are going to have to follow the harness around the machine to see if you can find such a condition.  Fuses are amperage sensitive, so excess voltage will not cause them to blow (because of faulty regulator).  Hope this helps.
