I have an edger with a 3.5 HP B&S engine (model 91202-0616) that starts, but dies as soon as the choke is released and the throttle is set to full. To date, I have replaced the diaphragm, the fuel tank gasket, and the gasket that sits between the carb. and engine.  I can blow in the fuel intake, and there are no obstructions.  Basically, the engine likes to run rich.  Any suggestions on what to do next?  Appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi Brian,

If it runs only with the choke on, then the engine is definately not getting fuel.  Recheck the carbs openings to make sure all are clear, especially the small holes in the carb throat.  Check the position of the spring and dome cap under the diaphragm.

Got it fixed.  The problem was that the screen that covers the metal fuel intake (this is the fuel intake that goes into the carb throat) was rusted on the bottom.  I cleaned the screen with carb cleaner.  Have a followup question.  The small bowl within the fuel tank has rust on the bottom.  What can I use to remove the rust, and is there any product that I can use to coat the surface to prevent the rust from reappearing?

Good work!  I forgot to mention about the screen on the pick up tube.  
It's hard to get at the inside of the tank.  Draining, washing and sandblasting the tank are the only way to completely remove all rust.  For a quick partial cleaning of a badly rusted tank, I have added small stones and water and shaken it.  As far as a coating, I don't know what paint would resist fuel except for some gas tank epoxy coatings.  Probably, if you can get in there with a screwdriver and scrape it the best you can, the rust should not worsen as long as water or condensation is not allowed to enter.  During off season, keep the tank full with stabilized fuel or drain it and spray the inside with WD-40.
