Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Wont Start???, carbarator, exhaust ports

Question
Humm... That instruction tip sounds like it would be my baby, however, here goes...
My dad bought a snapper 2 cycle lawnmower, about 10-15 years ago, maybe even 20? Their is no model number on it? it is a rotary mower, rear bagger, it has a control on the engine, that says stop slow fast choke. the control is attached directly to the miniature carbarator, is sprign loaded, and snaps into the three positions.
It was used about three times, before it and he retired and has been sitting in a shed since, with the gas still in it...
When my mower threw a rod, during spring clean up, it decided to get some use out of it, as it really is brand new....
After about 7000 hours of fooling around with this thing it will only start if I spray engine start into the carb.It runs for about 30 seconds then stalls. Obviously, it's not getting gas, but I just can't figure out where it flows, in this miniature toy? I ran wires through every opening and hole I could find. The needle float is operating. I put in new gas. NOTHING? Got a Hint?

Answer
If you are positive the problem is not related to the carb being plugged, there are two things you should check.  First, check that you have good spark (should jump a 1/8" gap to ground)  Second, check that the exhaust ports and/or muffler aren't plugged with carbon.  While you are checking the exhaust ports, visually inspect the piston and ring(s) for scuffing.  If there is any significant scuffing, stop there and put mower at the curb.  Third, check that there isn't something caught underneath the reed valve(s).  Just a suggestion....don't think of a mower as a toy, it can be a very dangerous piece of equipment if serviced or used incorrectly.  Hope this helps.
