Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5HP Briggs and Stratton, briggs and stratton, riding lawnmower

Question
Thanks for such a quick response.
Unfortunately and embarrassing to admit, I am not that familar with small engine repair and don't know what (or where) the "points" are.  I realize this sounds stupid, but I will look into this right away.

If you can direct me to the "points" I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again.

I have an old (maybe 1960's vintage) riding lawnmower (from Montgomery Ward's department store) with a 5hp B&S engine.  I recently tried to start this and could not seem to get a spark. I tested the voltage at the plug as I turned over the engine and it registered about 6 volts. How much voltage (or amps - which don't seem to register at all on my gauge) does the plug need to create a spark. Should i replace the magneto or is there some other problem area i should be looking at?  Thanks for your advice.

You need about 25,000 volts to jump the spark plug under the compression stroke.

Have you checked the points?

Let me know.

Answer
No problem.  The points are located under the flywheel.  You will see the flywheel when you remove the sheet metal blower housing.  Depending on which starter you have, you may need a special clutch removal tool and you will need a flywheel puller to remove the flywheel.

My advice would be to install an electronic ignition kit.  Several companies sell kits, even Briggs, and you don't need very many tools to install them. Some use wire nuts and others need to be soldered.  Most kits will work, even the less expensive ones, usually less than $15.  I installed numerous brands of kits and haven't had any trouble.

Let me know what you decide to do.
