Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower engine repair, air gap, tappet

Question
I took my mower in for a tune up and they wanted to replace some parts as well at an additional cost of $180.00 for Points, Condenser, and Flywheel Key. I can't find these parts on the exploded view drawing or parts list on the Toro website. It is a 1984 Toro model 16297 with a Tecumseh TNT100-10077E engine. I have done the fresh gas and clean air filter steps. I have also replaced the inlet needle, seat, and clip along with the bowl gasket and primer assembly. It has a new short block that I replaced 2 years ago but all the rest of the parts are original except for the ones I just replaced 2 weeks ago.
Last year it was cutting out after it got warm, this year it just won't start.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Answer
If it was cutting out when warm, it's possible there is an ignition problem.  Because it's a new short block, I don't suspect you have an issue related to compression (burnt valves or improper tappet clearance).  I don't have access to a decent parts manual, but a 1984 model should be electronic ignition.  You haven't said whether you have checked for spark.  If it has no spark, you need to make sure the air gap between the armature and the flywheel is 0.010" and the shut-off leads aren't shorted to ground.  If it has no spark, you will need to replace the ignition module.  Hope this helps.
