Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs 12 h p 4 cycle engine, weed mower, degree angles

Question
hello robert, i have a 1996 12 h p briggs, with a cast iron sleeve and an oil pump.  it sounds to me that this is a commercial grade engine and it should last a while if taken care of.  I modified a high weed mower using this engine. i have to cut high weeds at a 20% grade uphill, about 7 acres in all and two football fields long uphill.my question is:  is this going to stress the engine because the oil is sitting on a sharp angle? thankyou and God bless you, jon

Answer
jon, Briggs states that 15 degree angles are maximum. Most tractors cannot function (tip) at 15 or more. You should operate at steep angles for a only brief periods of times. With the proper oil in the sump and operating on a incline, if the engine starts to "emit blue smoke" I would change angles. Best advice I can offer,,,,,,let me know what happens,,,,,,Bob
