Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): variable speed riding mower, variable speed control, hydrostatic drive

Question
Troybilt riding mower with 42" deck and 16 HP Kohler.  Model 609G063 Bought in 2000.  Has pedal operated variable speed control.  When new, the speed control worked fine but now it is slow and slower.  Can you tell me what parts are causing the problem?  Thanks   L

Answer
Hi Luther,

As long as you have good power from the engine and the ground speed is slow even when the mower is not under a load, I would look at the hydrostatic drive system.  Start with an easy fluid level check, then a hydro filter replacement and finally, a fluid replacement.  If none of that helps, there may be an internal problem, which usually requires sending it to a hydrostatic repair specialist.  A dealer would be able to forward it there.

Let me know how you make out.
