Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Our minibike, briggs stratton, gas tank

Question
Our minibike has been sitting in the basement for more than a yr, and it runs, but lacks power. If I lift the back wheel off the ground, it revs pretty high, but when I sit on it, it barely pulls forward, it has a new clutch, and I cleaned the gas tank and carb and plug. I weigh about 200lbs, it should be able to handle me-right? its a briggs& stratton 2.5 hp. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Gary,

It's hard to say.  2 & 1/2 hp is at the low side for power.  3&1/2 or 5 would be better.  Also, the gear ratio would determine the torque available.  If the bike was fine before, then maybe it just needs some adjustment. Try setting the carb high speed mixture jet. Set it at 1 & 1/2 turns out, then adjust if needed.

Good Luck,
Michael
