Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper Rear Tine Tiller, rear tine tiller, metal casings

Question
I have the opportunity to buy a Snapper IR5002B rear tine tiller from a friend.  The 5 hp engine runs fine but the transmission will not engage.  It will go forward for a couple of feet and then stop.  It will roll freely when pushed.  In the neutral position, the tines can be turn freely by hand.  What type repairs am I looking at?  There is no manual with the tiller.  The tiller has been used very little and I can get it at a very low price, but.....

Also, is there a website where I can print an exploded view of this tiller?

Thanks,
Les

Answer
I don't know of any web sites for a parts view, but you can order a manual from Snapper.

As for the transmission, check to see if any oil is in it.  If there is no fluid, then the repairs could be very expensive.

Check the tine seals, these usually wear out allowing gear oil to leak out.

I remember the model number but it has been several, ok 5 plus years since we sold Snapper Tillers.  I remember repairing a model number very similar to this one but do not recall what was repaired...we mainly sell/service Troy Bilts...can you tell if the transmission has two metal casings bolted together or if it looks like a casting?

Are you planning on doing a lot of tilling or just a small garden?  Snapper makes great push mowers, our best seller, but there tillers aren't as durable.

Let me know about the transmission case.
