Snowmobile Repair: Timing Points, point gap, screw driver

Question
I have a 1972 Chapparal with a 340. It has points I just put new ones in I need to know how to time them .. I know the gap should be 16 degrees and the timing should be 14 BTC but when I line up the mark to gap it correctly the magneto is in the way.(the hole to gap is not where the points are line up) Here is where my main question comes into play. How do I work around this to time them when I can't see them?

Answer
Hello Steve,

I would imagine you are using a dial indicator in the plug hole to check timing? If so, I believe you could remove the flywheel to get the pints where they would be right on. That is hard to have the points like that. To be honest, I have always ONLY set the point gap, and never checked the timing on my sleds. So, in other words, I would get the points to where they would be open as far as possible at 0.016 . I have always had luck with this, but it is a wise idea to make sure the timing is right on. Make sure that the points are loose enough, too. If they are sticking a bit form being tightened with a screw driver this can happen. Hope this helps. Let me know if you any other questions. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
