Snowmobile Repair: Snowmobile Repair, gas tank, fuel lines

Question
What should be done to get a snowmobile back to running condition after it has been under 10 feet of water for about 8 hours?  I had it recovered and placed in a friends heated garage immediately after we got it out.  We have the seat in front of a dryer/heater, drained the cases-gas-oil, popped the plugs and spun the motor until no more water came out, drained the pipe, greased the zerks.  What else needs to be done before I attempt to get it running and back on the trails?

Answer
Hello Michael,

That's a job to have, as I'm sure you know! Since you have greased the sled, the engine and fuel system are all that are left for the most part. The gas tank is going to  need to be drained. The fuel lines will need to be removed and dried. The carb will also need this. As for the engine, it has probably been damaged. When an engine is hot, and then water hits it, it generally wrecks havoc with it internally. My recommendation would be to get the entire engine taken apart and cleaned, dried, and also oiled. The bearings are most probably wet, and will wear quickly. I would imagine the rings are shot too. You may want to do a compression check. All new gaskets should be installed also, during re-assembly. Quite a few sleds go under each year, and they are revived. Sorry for the misfortune. Let me know if you have any questions at all. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
