Snowmobile Repair: Speedometer/odometer, polaris sleds, speedometer drive

Question
I have two Polaris sleds that the Speedos stopped working.  A 92 Indy 500 efi and a 93 XLT, I have narrowed it down to where the cable attaches to the drivetrain under the secondary.  Is it easy to fix, or very expensive?  How would I do it?

Answer
Hello Kyle,

I think you can do the job with out much difficulty. Just be sure to check the speedometer with a drill connected to the cable, and spin it, to see if the needle moves. Replacing the speeometer drive unit should be an easy job. Use a ratchet to remove the bolts holding it in place, ( generally three). Then, pull all of it out, there really isn't much in there. Here at Als Snowmobile, you can get a used unit for 25.00, : http://www.alssnowmo.com/PRODUCTPARTS.ASPX?pn_deptid=602 . Also, a few other options, if you want to go this route. Ebay has a few Drive units I found for very cheap: http://search.ebay.com/polaris-speedometer-drive_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQfrom... . Just look at them, to make sure they look the same as your orgional part. Also, you could always try Ronnies : http://www.ronnies.com/ , and give him a call. I hope this helps you out! Best of luck to you with the sleds, I hope you can get their speedos working good before the snow flys! Let me know if I can help you at all with any questions! --Arcticatman
