Snowmobile Repair: snowmobile repair, quaker state, coolant level

Question
I have a 1997 ski doo touring model. Yesterday, it all of sudden lost power. It does not have enough power to go up a hill. In order to start from a stop,it needs a push. The motor sounds fine and we just got it back from having a tune up and a piston replaced. Is it possible that the we need a new spark plug? Also,I had been using a Quaker State small engine 2 cycle oil that is not design for fuel injection. Do you have any idea why it could of all of sudden lost power?

Answer
Hello Kevin,

It sounds like your problem may be related to the new piston being installed, or your spark plugs. If the piston wasn't installed properly or if the head gasket is leaking, you will have this "power-loss" type of problem. A good accurate way to check for a piston-compression problem is to use a compression gauge. I have had the same exact problem and have corrected it by installing new spark plugs, so that could be a possibility too. Just be sure to use the NGK BR9ES plugs. You mentioned that the engine sounds O.K. If, when you accelerate and it doesn't move to quick, listen to the engine, if it still sounds good I would suspect a drive train problem, check the drive belt. I'm not sure if you if you have the touring fan cooled model, but if you do, check the fan belt to see if it's worn. If you have the LC (liquid cooled) model, make certain that the coolant level is correct. As far as oil is concerned, I would not suggest using Quaker State small engine. If you prefer Quaker State brand oil, try using Quaker State Snowmobile Engine Oil, otherwise try using Castrol Super High-performance Snowmobile Oil. Let me know if you need help with any questions. Good luck with the sled! Mr.W
