Snowmobile Repair: Carb. adjusting, arctic cat panther, snowmobile service

Question
I need to adjust the carb. on a 72 Artic Cat and a 76 Polaris. Both seem to have the same type of carb. The choke needs to be adjusted and so does the gas air mixture.

Can you help?

Is there a book I can buy that would help?

Answer
Hello John,
I'm not really sure what model sleds you have, ie: Arctic Cat Panther, Polaris Colt, ect., so I can't give you the factory recomended specs. But I would recomend turning both mixture screws all the way in, clockwise, just until the screws stop. Then turn both screws counter-clockwise 1 full turn, start the engine and let it warm-up a bit then turn the idle turn screw ( which is generally the smaller of the two screws, and closer to the engine)clockwise just until the engine begins to slow down, then start turning it the other way, counter-clockwise until the engine starts to run smoothly again, keep turning it until the engine starts to run roghly, then start turning it clockwise again so the engine runs just right, while the engine is idling. Then, lift the sled of the ground so that the track is clear off the ground, start the engine, and run the sled at full throttle while adjusting the high speed screw ( generally larger then the idle speed screw,) repeating the same proccess used for the idle screw. If the engine dosen't respond to the adjustments, the carbs will need to be rebuilt, kits are availible at: www.denniskirk.com . You can get a good, accurate manual made by Intertec, called Snowmobile Service Manual, 11 Edition, availible at www.amazon.com . I hope this information helps and let me know if you have any other questions that I can help with. Good luck with the sleds! Mr.W
