Steering Column Repair: 1979 steering column swap, turn signal switch, tilt column

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1979 chevy K20 4-speed on the floor with no tilt column or cruise. i bought a 1983 chevy column that has tilt no cruise manual on the floor at a swap meet. my problem lies with the rod for the key release. the rod on the 1983 is longer and im going to swap out the rods because the ignition switch connectors are different plug styles so im going to transfer the ignition switch from the 1979 to the 1983 as well. However i cant get the steering column shroud off the column to transfer the rods and switches. the column  is broken down (shaft left in place) to the lower column shroud that i need info on how to remove so i can swap out the key release rods.  Thank you for your assistance.

ANSWER: Oh Chris:

I'm sorry to say the actuator rods you are attempting to swap are completely different from a tilt to a non tilt. You won't be able to use any of the parts from one to the other aside from the lock cylinder and turn signal switch.  EVERYTHING else is different.

If you need parts for your original column, take a look at our company website.  we stock a lot of parts and can get many more, just let us know what you need to repair your column & I'll see if we can help you.

QUESTION: Thanks Doug but is there any way to remove the lower column shroud, its a plastic piece on the tilt column that hides the tilting mechanism and the key release actuator? Thank you for your help

ANSWER: Good morning Chris:

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.

QUESTION: That is very helpful Doug thank you. However i need the info to remove the lower shroud on the tilt column

Answer
Chris:

This one unfortunately is much more involved.  You will also need a pivot pin puller to gain access below the tilt housing.  There are about 35 steps which is why we posted video, rather than step by step pictures.  I would recommend you download whatever drivers you need for the video to play or get access to a computer that has a fast enough speed to load them.

I can however supply you with an exploded view of the column if that helps---click here
