Steering Column Repair: steering column replacement, passkey iii, pontiac aztek

Question
I have to replace the steering column on a 2002 pontiac aztek, does it have to be an exact match or will another year, make or model do?  If so what year?  It currently has the passkey III antitheft system, tilt, it is automatic with shift lever on the ground, equipped with air bag and radio controls.

Answer
Hi Julian:

The column you are replacing needs to be from another Aztek, but the years can range from 2001-2003.  When you replace it, you will need to reuse the antitheft system and the same key and lock cylinder from the original column as that has the correct code for the BCM (Body control module) in the vehicle itself.
If you need to know how to reprogram it, we have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to accomplish that on GM vehicles.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions.
