Steering Column Repair: Shift lever does not move to D2, cadillac fleetwood, 1995 cadillac fleetwood

Question
QUESTION: The transmission shift lever on the steering column of my 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood does not move to D2. I can move it to PRNDD3 as usual. The car drives fine and the transmission shifts fine as well. ATF is clean, the level is fine. No codes. No noises.

Your input is greatly appreciated!

ANSWER: Hello Arman:
This problem can be caused by a number of reasons, but the most common is a mis-adjusted shift cable.  although you have all of the other positions, sometimes they are all off adjustment.  another cause could be a bad shift cable itself, jamming before it reaches its furthest position.  Lastly it could be inside the transmission itself.  You will need to disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if it travels to the extreme.  If it does, the problem is in the transmission.  If not, then reconnect it and disconnect it at the column 9under the dash & try it again.  If it stops short, the problem is in the column, if it travels fully the problem is a bad cable.

I hope this helps you

QUESTION: Hi Doug,

I have narrowed the problem to the steering column. Something prevents the shift lever from reaching D2. Shift linkage and pointer are perfectly adjusted - I have confirmed that by disconnecting the shift tube from the links to the shifter mounted on the transmission.

What could be wrong inside the steering column?
What are the common failure modes/parts inside a GM tilt STG column?

Your insight is highly appreciated@

Answer
Hi Arman:

There is nothing common about your problem, although I have run into it before (years ago).  The shift bowl is the last part of the column when disassembling it and it's quite a job, including removing it from the car)
I don't have any more insight for you, however I can refer you to our company website that has video of how to disassemble the column completely if you are interested.

They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
