Steering Column Repair: STEERING COLUMN, gm dealer, chevrolet truck

Question
I have a 1995 Lumina with a chip key. The dealer wants 150.00 for a new key, too expensive for my blood. I found an aftermarket lock cylinder for cheaper from the auto parts with a wire on the end. Im thinking this will do. Ive done ignition locks before but not sure if this is the same install removal. I heard that the cylinder has to be turned to acc, of course i do not have the key. Thats why i am asking because I just do not know. Do you have a digram or step by step you could send? Or any advice on how to by pass the ecu, maybe to remove and install another ecu? All tips and hints are welcome. Thank you for your time.

Answer

VATs key
Hi Jeff:

I'm assuming from your question you lost your key, and the dealer will not look up the code and key cut to create a new one.  If that is correct, you have the wrong dealer.  Those codes are based on the VIN number and are available usually for 13-15 years.  They can be had for free from any GM dealer with proof of ownership...try another dealer.  Once you know the key cut and the VATS chip code any locksmith (or dealer) can cut you the correct key that will turn and start the car.  If per chance the code is not available anymore, we have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. although the instructions are for a Chevrolet truck, the columns are very similar and should help you get to where you need to go.  In addition, if you can get the key cut, but do not know the VATS code, the second web link is for the procedure on how to bypass the VATS anti theft system, but you still need to VATS code to do it.
