Steering Column Repair: 2000 Saturn LS Series steering column, haynes manual, saturn ls

Question
I am having problems with the key cylinder. The key will not turn and the steering wheel is locked. I am attempting to remove the steering column. It seems that something is holding it on the top, but I can't see anything but a bracket around the shaft. The haynes manual doesn't say that that part needs to be removed. I need help on this matter. An assembly diagram and removal instructions would be nice. Also, after the column is out, how do you remove the lock pin and will the system work without the lock pin.

Answer

Sample Lock assembly
Hi Connie:
The lock cylinders fail quite often on these vehicles. Try this:
Insert the key into the lock and gently tap the key deeper into the lock with a small hammer. Do not hit it any harder than you would if you were hitting your own thumb...you don't want to break the key, just jar the lock to read the key. The tumblers are stuck. If that does not work, then you will need a locksmith or technician to repair or replace the lock cylinder.
The locking mechanism is all part of the ignition lock cylinder & switch assembly.  You do not need to remove the column to replace the lock assembly...you're making more work out of it than necessary.
If you want to replace the lock assembly, you will need to chisel the 'break-off' bolts out of the lock assembly to remove it from the column, however, that too is doing more than necessary.
Here's what you need...the lock cylinder replaced.
To do this, usually the key needs to rotate 1 click so you can depress the locking pin in the cylinder.  since it won't turn, you will need to try the procedure I described earlier or drill out the lock cylinder (VERY CAREFULLY) so you can rotate it enough to get it out.  Then you can replace the cylinder and be done.  Total cost for the parts is about $40.  The rest is labor.

Good Luck
