Steering Column Repair: Stolen classic, ford galaxy, salvage yards

Question
I have a 1970 ford galaxy convertible. The steering column is a non tilt and has the ignition switch missing. It has been started so much without an ignition switch (with screw drivers and things)that it has tore up the steering column with groves and holes so that an ignition switch will not fit properly.
I want to know if there is a way to fix the metal around the ignition switch so that a new ignition switch can be put back in properly? I have not been able to find a steering column from the salvage yard to replace it.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Nigel:
Try this site.  I'm sure you can find what you need

www.car-part.com

It's the website all the salvage yards use when they say "Hang on--let me see if my other yard has it".  Actually it's an online database of all the salvage yards in America.  You can search by part, location or price
When you do your search, (I tried) there is no listing for "1970 Ford Galaxy", so you need to use the category "1970 Ford Other", select "All Areas" and you will find a couple of dozen columns listed .  Then you will need to call these yards to see what they actually still have.  Shipping is usually fairly inexpensive (without the steering wheel).

Good Luck
Doug
