Steering Column Repair: stuck ignition tumbler, 1997 chevy 1500, lock cylinder

Question
I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 pickup, ignition stuck in the on position and will not move. I have ignition switch removed, but can't get the tumbler off or to move? HOw do I get the tumbler off?

Answer

gm housing
Hi Nathan:
Most of the time the lock cylinder disintegrates in the housing and will not allow you to rotate it as you described.
Fortunately, the removal process requires you to rotate it to the "start" position.  You did not say if it would go to that position, but usually when it won't go 'off', it will still go to 'on' and 'start'.  If not, then you need to drill it out.  If it will rotate to 'start', then disconnect the battery before beginning the next steps.

You will need to remove the covers to access the housing and see the hole for the release I am referring to.
Be careful not to damage the 4-way button on the top of the column as you attempt to remove the covers...that's a $275 switch if you break the red button by mistake.
Once the covers are off, then, in the 'start position, insert a pick into the hole on the top of the housing pushing down on a spring loaded locking pin.  It is only in position in the 'start' position.  Then the cylinder will slide out.
I am enclosing a diagram to illustrate the access hole and lock cylinder removal.
Good luck
Doug
