Steering Column Repair: steering wheel reinstall, 77 corvette, gm vehicles

I have a 77 corvette that Iam trying to reinstall steering wheel on. I can only get the steering wheel to start on the spline but after starting easily it stops after about 1/2 way. I made sure the spline was clean. Is there a special way to reinstall?

Hi Frank:
GM vehicles steering wheels and columns have a master spline that command the wheel be put on in only one position (centered).  If you do not have it on the correct position (or if someone else forced it on in a wrong position) it will be difficult to install correctly.  I can suggest using a small file to clean the splines and locate the master spline.  Once you do that, you should be able to reinstall it correctly.
