QuestionI have a 93 Astro, tilt wheel, with play in the upper steering column, under
the hood the
upper portion (where it goes into the firewall) there is some movement and I
am guessing the nearing holding the column needs replacement.
The upper column and / or bearing is unavailable from the dealer.
I am getting some free play in the steering, I suspect it is from the column
as all the rest of the steering is tight (tie rod ends etc etc) , replaced within
the last few years.

Hi Johnny:
I am a little confused as to where you believe the play is coming from. In the same sentence you mention the "upper steering colyumn" and the "lower bearing" under the hood.
Please clarify which bearing you are talking about and I can help/
I am enclosing an exploded view of a GM tilt column if that will help.
Lastly, the most common problem is in the tilt portion which in the upper half neater the dash. The bolts displayed in the picture loosen up and the entire upper portion of the column moves about.
I'll wait for your reply before further explanation.
