Steering Column Repair: Steering Column Assembly, 2007 chevy hhr, chevy hhr

Question
I have a 2007 Chevy HHR and have been told by the dealer that I need a steering column assembly because the motor in the steering column is faulty and is causing signals to be sent to the computer that shouldn't be sent.  What exactly is the part that I will need to replace this?  I asked the dealer and was told a steering column assembly, but I cannot find this specific part when searching for it on the internet to compare prices.

Answer

HHR
Hi Mandy:
I too had never heard of such a thing.  So I called Chevrolet & we researched it together.  The steering column is no longer a column.  It is a series of shafts and motors that assist you in steering the vehicle.  The part you asked about had a failure rate that is fairly common.  The repair consists of a "kit" from Chevrolet that sells for @$575.00 plus labor.
I have enclosed a picture of the steering column assembly.  The part you are referring to is #1.
I checked with NHTSA to see if there was any recall & alas, no.
I'm sorry I don't have better news, but that's what I am told.
Good luck
