VATS key
Hi Larry:
The quickest and most inexpensive way to solve this problem is to contact any GM dealer parts department, provide them with the VIN (vehicle ID number) and they can cut a set of keys for you.  You may have to do this in person and provide a title or proof of ownership, but it's a lot cheaper than the lock or replacement.
The problem you have is that your vehicle has an anti-theft system in it (a small black chip on the key).  That chip has a value assigned to it.  Without knowing the value, you cannot simply replace the lock or the column.  The vehicle would still not start until it reads the correct value on the replacement key.  There are 15 different values.  So you could spend $100-$300 on parts and labor and still be nowhere.
Even a locksmith cannot help you without knowing that chip value...and to decode your car can cost up to $300 alone...then you can start replacing parts.
GM only keeps vehicle information for 13 years, so do not wait too long.
Good Luck
