Steering Column Repair: 2002 chevy, turn signal switch, lock cylinder

Question
On my silverado the key cylinder will not turn, also the steering wheel does not lock. Does it need to lock to turn the key? If so how can this be repaired. It is a 4wd

Answer

gm lock
Hi Walt:
It sounds like the lock cylinder has failed.  The upper portion of the column need to be tron down to access the bolt that holds the cylinder in place.  I can include an exploded view for your reference along with the instructions on how to replace it:
To replace Ignition lock cylinder:

•  Remove horn pad attaching screws.
•  Pull pad reward, then turn horn lead insulator in counterclockwise direction to disconnect horn lead.
•  Remove steering wheel attaching nut and retainer
•  Using suitable steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel.
•  Using a suitable tool, compress lock plate (horn contact carrier on tilt models) and remove snap ring (C-ring on tilt models).
•  Remove lock plate, canceling cam.
•  Remove turn signal lever actuating arm & screw.  Depress hazard warning button, then unscrew button.
•  Pull lower wiring connector for turns signal switch wiring from bracket.
•  Remove retaining screws and remove turn signal switch, then remove buzzer switch. Gently but firmly partially pull the turn signal switch out of the upper cover to give you access.
•  Remove key warning buzzer contact and then remove the lock cylinder retaining screw and lock cylinder.
•  Align cylinder key with keyway in housing, then push new lock cylinder assembly into housing until fully seated.
•  Install lock cylinder retaining screw.
•  Install buzzer switch, turn signal switch and steering wheel.
