Steering Column Repair: Steering Wheel Replacement, mercury sable, ford dealership

Question
Hello, I have a 2003 mercury sable ls & had to replace my steering wheel.  Due to the chip in my vehicle being linked to my original wheel & key, I am unable to start the vehicle up. Will I be able to replace the chip itself or do is my vehicle a goner?

Hi Tiffany:

I'm assuming you mean you had to replace the steering column assembly, not just the steering wheel.  That being true, if you can locate the original one, you can remove the transceiver from it (if it's still ok and not damaged or broken).  this is a small black electronic piece that surrounds the lock where the key goes in.  Install it in this vehicle and do the same with the ignition lock cylinder.
I'll attach a picture of the transponder here.
The key talks to the transceiver and the transceiver talks to the car computer.  They all have to be original or new and programmed to the same (original) code from the factory.  Since you need to use the original key, you will need to use the original lock or have a new one built that allows your original key to turn it as well.

I hope you this explains it for you.
If none of that is available, you can always have your vehicle towed to a Ford dealership, purchase a new transceiver and have the new key and transceiver reprogrammed (much more expensive than the 1st option)

Good luck
