Steering Column Repair: Shift Lever, hi doug, brake switch

Question
I just bought a '99 Tahoe for my daughter. Come to find out, when the vehicle comes up to temperature, if you put it in park, you cannot get it back out. Let it cool down, it shifts just fine. I'm suspect the brake switch may be the culprit, but why only when it's warm? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Doug:
That's an odd one....
(I'm going to answer this assuming it's a column shift)
I too am going to guess as well simply because I have not experienced this one before.  The brake switch sends a signal not only to the rear lights but to a solenoid in the steering column that releases the shift lever.
If you look on the underside of the column, you will see 3 holes, 2 will  have screws in them and the third will be empty and allow you to look inside the column.  With flashlight , you should be able to see the silver plunger which is the safety release end of the solenoid.  When the truck does not shift, attempt to push the solenoid with a small screwdriver (it will only move about 1/2 inch) and then allow you to shift it manually.  If that works, then my guess is the brake switch isn't sending a signal to the solenoid or the solenoid isn't working properly.
But again, this is all only a guess.
Good luck
