QUESTION: I just had the tranny rebuilt and went 4 wheeling and needed to back up and found that I only had N&D no park or drive 1&2 so I took it back to my transmission shop and they said it was in the lock or column,oh they also broke the new key lock in the column that I just put in three months earlier. So what can I do about this? thank you

Answer
Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for a couple of days.

It sounds like the shift tube has broken or become misaligned inside the column.  The tube rotates inside the column moving the arms and linkage on the bottom to shift the trans.  The tube is a 2-piece tube (one slides inside the other) held together by melted plastic.  Once it breaks, you have very little control over the shift position and LOTS of free-play.  The only repair is to rebuild the column (take it out of the truck and completely overhaul). I'm not even sure if you can find parts anymore for a vehicle 20 yrs old.

As far as the key part goes, if it's not in park, the it's not hard to damage the lock cylinder, but that too requires more work to be done when you overhaul the column.

I hope I've helped you on this.
