Steering Column Repair: steering columns noise, grease job, steering columns

Question
Jay,
Thanks for taking the time on reading my email.  I just recently purchased a 2004 2500hd silverado PU. It has 50k miles and I hearing a clunking noise only when I turn, Left or right, from my steering column.  I heard this is common problem whith chevy PU that the factory does not greese the intermidiate shaft enough.  Is this a hard problem to fix on my own, and how would you accomplish this task, or is it something i should take to the dealership.  Thanks for all your help.

Answer
Hello Matt,
I would suggest you call your local dealership and ask for an estimate to replace the shaft with a new design, if it is available. It isn't a simple task to grease the shaft, nor is it with the new design. The same goes for replacing it. If there is a new design replacement available, have it installed and then take it in regularly to have the shaft greased. The problem is that the shaft isn't included with a "normal" grease job you can get with your oil change. It takes extra time and isn't easy to do.
I've heard reports of some shops simply greasing the old shaft and calling it good (until it's grease time again).

I can't tell you if it's something you could do yourself. As a test, crawl under the truck while someone turns the wheel back and forth for you (with engine off). You'll be able to see the components you'll need to remove. It's a matter of your comfort zone on whether you'll want to tackle it or not. But like I explained, it will still need regular routine maintenance.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
