Steering Column Repair: 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE STEERING COLUMN, jeep ignition switch, jeep cherokee

Question
hOW DO YOU REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN IN A 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE 4 CYL? iS IT DIFFICULT. MY KEY IS STUCK AND WON'T COME OUT AND THE JUNK YARD SAID I WOULD BE BETTER OFF REPLACING THE STEERING COLUMN BECAUSE IT WAS EASIER. IS THIS TRUE?

Answer
Hello Robyn,

The column isn't too difficult to replace. But neither is replacing the ignition switch lock assembly. The lock assemblys run about $20-$25. It takes less than an hour to put it in and can be done with a few basic tools. But, you need a steering wheel puller to get the steering wheel off. You can rent one from some of the larger parts stores; some only ask for a deposit which is returned to you when you bring the tool back in good shape.

OR

You can buy a used column ($50 - $300), spend about an hour and a half putting it in with a few basic hand tools.

OR

You can call a locksmith who, for $25-$90 (call around), can pull out his special tools and fish the broken end out and make you a new set of keys.

I recently replaced a neighbor's Jeep ignition switch. He had already picked up the new lock assembly. After I removed the old assembly I was able to remove the broken end by tapping the lock on a piece of wood as if I were pouring ketchup.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
